Communications (B.S.)



The communications program prepares graduates for current and emerging careers at the narrative intersection of textual, oral, visual and digital communication and design, producing professionals with skills rooted in creativity and idea generation, storytelling in visual, oral, and textual dimensions, and the multimedia skills required to translate ideas into reality.

Program Learning Outcomes

  • Planning and Process: students will apply a process of self-reflection and self-evaluation in order to plan their course of study and professional path in multimedia communication
  • Visual Literacy: students will read, interpret, and analyze visual information in multiple forms of media
  • Idea Invention: students will engage in generative and iterative processes to develop and communicate original ideas to achieve specific communication goals
  • Rhetoric and Writing: students will identify and apply written techniques of argument and persuasion appropriate to specific tasks and audiences
  • Visual/Verbal Presentation: students will synthesize their understanding of visual and verbal communication techniques and technologies to create effective presentations for specific audiences
  • Storytelling: students will identify and apply written and visual narrative strategies to the invention and communication of persuasive stories for specific audiences
  • History/ Theory: students will explore the relationship between meaning and context through analysis of historical and contemporary communicative expressions

Program Description

Today media exist in multiple, ever-changing platforms that constantly alter the ways that information is transmitted. This rapidly developing technological landscape forms the backdrop for the field of contemporary communication. Successful communication professionals must not only flexibly negotiate emerging media, but must also possess the skills and understanding to construct powerful narratives in both visual and written formats.

The B.S. in Communications prepares students for this dynamic, challenging media environment through a broad based education that emphasizes critical thinking, creative problem-solving, and a methodology where storytelling is at the nexus of media in various forms. The curriculum is based on the recognition that storytelling, in all its variety and media is at the basis of all successful communication. It is also the common thread that students will use to weave a personalized but coherent program, tailored to their own interests and needs while based on a conceptual core that allows for both specialization and exploration.

The program recognizes that integrated knowledge and cross-disciplinary experiences are the sources of creativity that will support professional success. From their first year students take courses in a range of disciplines that include design, writing, new media, and photography, providing a multi-disciplinary foundation on which creative professional innovation will thrive. The curriculum includes required and elective courses in the following areas--planning and process; history/theory; idea invention; visual literacy; rhetoric and writing; storytelling; and verbal/visual presentation-as well as two multidisciplinary “clusters” of the students’ own choice through which they will link their work in communication with other fields and sharpen their professional skills and interests.

Graduates of the program will be able to merge forceful narratives with the latest technologies, be visually literate, have a solid grasp of history and theory, be skilled in rhetoric and writing, presentation, and storytelling, be experienced in the process of idea invention, and be savvy, reflective planners. The program tailors itself to the unique career goals of each student and focuses upon the application of technology to the process of communication.
